June 2010

The Paradise team is looking forward to summer and we're anticipating lots of play in our fresh-water, alligator-free ponds.  We'll also enjoy an increase in occupancy as our guests take advantage of our air-conditioned playrooms and shady yards while their folks travel on day trips or longer vacations.  A reminder as we look ahead, Paradise is a hurricane-ready facility with generators and underground propane tanks that will run our electricity for seven days.  Please see the website for upcoming information on our hurricane emergency plan:  www.paradisefordogs.com.

Memorial Day Salute

Paradise would like to honor and thank America's men and women who have given their lives so our country can be free.  To those who are now currently serving in the armed services or are retired, we would like to offer a free nail trim for your dog(s) if you bring them in for doggie daycare between June 1-15 (which includes Flag Day, 6/14).

Memorial Day Weekend Hours - Paradise Closed on May 31

Memorial Day is one of the holidays that Paradise is totally closed to the public.  All dogs being dropped off for boarding must come in by 10 a.m. Sat. morning, May 29.  Pick-ups will still take place on Sat. & Sun. afternoons between 3 - 5 pm as usual.  Paradise will be closed on Monday and then open again as usual on Tues., June 1st at 7 am.

Why Drop Off in the Morning??

Even if your dog comes to Paradise every day, each day is a NEW day at Paradise because each day we have a new group of friends for your pet to play with.  It's not the same group that was here yesterday (or any other day), and so your pet must integrate with the new pack each day.  The earlier your dog can get here, the easier it is for him/her to meet & greet the others.  In our experience, coming in after noon is just too stressful for the new arrivals, and at Paradise we do our best to ensure that our guests have a positive experience.  A reminder:  dogs coming in for pond on Mon. Wed. & Sat. must be in the pond 8:30 am for the same reason as above.

Fleas and Your Dog's Environment

Attempting to control fleas on our pets is a multi-step process.  Adult fleas spend most of their time on an animal, but the flea eggs, larvae and pupae are found in abundance in the environment such as in carpeting, rugs, bedding, and grass. For every flea that you see on your pet, there are likely to be hundreds of eggs and larvae in your home and yard. Therefore, a truly effective flea control program always includes treating the environment as well as treating your pet. These are the 4 essential steps for a successful flea control program:  1). Remove fleas from the indoor environment;  2.) Remove fleas from the outdoor environment;  3). Remove fleas from pets;  4). Keep immature forms of fleas from developing.

Ingredients of flea control products can vary and include adulticides, chemicals that can kill immature forms, insect growth regulators/development inhibitors, or combinations thereof. The choice of products will need to be based on the extent of the flea infestation, the species, breed, health status, and age of the pet; the environment; presence of other pets; and special family needs (e.g., infants, people with asthma).  Be sure to check with your veterinarian to determine the best flea treatment for your pet and its environment.

Paradise requires that all its guests be on a flea and tick preventative program.  Additionally, every time a dog comes in for daycare or boarding it is checked for fleas and ticks.  Parents are told that if a flea & tick bath is necessary, it will be given to the dog at the owner's expense.  Paradise grounds are treated with flea preventative.

Distemper in Brevard

We're amazed at how many people think a distemper vaccination is unnecessary for their pet because the disease "isn't that common".  That is so not true!  There have been 3 outbreaks in Brevard recently and one shelter closed 2 times this spring.   At Paradise we are extremely vigilant about all dogs that come onto the property - all must be vaccinated with current bordatella (kennel cough), distemper and rabies vaccines.

Spa Day Winner Announced

Rocky's mom, Callie, won the free Spa Day drawing from the contest sponsored by Paradise at the Strawberry Festival this spring.  Congratulations, Callie!

Pond Day Correct Change

If you're bringing your dog to pond on Wed. or Sat., but not planning to have your pet stay for daycare, please bring the correct change.  The charge is $5 per dog if you have a Pond Membership or $10 if you do not have a Membership.  Thank you!!

School is Out

Please remember to watch for children with their toys and their dogs who might be playing in or near the streets!

Two June Specials

1.)  Dogs coming in for daycare on Monday or Tuesday in June will receive a free nail trim if requested.  2) Dogs with Pond Memberships that come in for daycare & pond on Mondays (only) in June will receive a free nail trim if requested and a free pond day.

July 4th Holiday Weekend - Paradise closed on the 4th

Paradise is the perfect place for your pets over this special weekend.  We have air conditioning, lots of play pals, new bff's, and country music to disguise any fireworks displays.  Some of the neighborhoods at our own homes looked & sounded like war zones last year, so we KNOW Paradise is a great place to stay!!  We will have normal business hours on Sat., July 3rd, but then we will be totally closed to the public until Monday, July 5 at 7 am.

Used Couches Needed

Pets at Paradise are able to sleep on couches because our customers and their friends donate their used leather couches.  Your pets appreciate you and so do we!!!

Leashes Have Other Uses Too

Use of a leash inside the house is a great way to help teach a rowdy and unruly adolescent dog and out-of-control puppy, or a puppy that's being housebroken and you want to keep him in your sight.  Especially with guests arrive!  Jim Burwell, Houston's "Dog Whisperer", in a Jan/Feb 2010 article in Pet Services Journal tells how to do this and says, "While some people may find using the leash inside the home with their dog a small inconvenience, the end result - good manners - is achieved much more quickly.  "  [Pet Services Journals (ABKA) are available in the Paradise reception area and may be checked out upon request.]
